Eating Delicious Dak-galbi In Chuncheon, Gangwon-Do!

Last week, the ottoKWORLD team headed off on our first overnight adventure, an overnight trip to Gangwon-do Province. The trip was kindly sponsored by SBA and Gangwon-do Province for YouTubers in Korea. We’ll be posting various videos of sights we saw and the delicious food we ate! Be sure to stay tuned for more videos of our Gangwon-do trip!

Our first delicious meal on the trip was dak-galbi, at 춘천 명물 닭갈비·막국수 – Chuncheon Myeong-mul Dak-galbi · Mak-guksu. Chuncheon is famous for their dak-galbi (and even has a famous dak-galbi street with many dak-galbi restaurants), so we were super excited to try it. Dak-galbi is a sweet-spicy, stir-fried chicken dish that gained popularity with students and soldiers in Chuncheon in the earlier part of the twentieth century.
Once we arrived at the restaurant, we filed in and chose tables where the raw ingredients lay piled high in a pan, waiting to be cooked right in front of us. The chicken, gochujang, rice cakes, cabbage, sweet potatoes, and scallions already looked delicious raw and we were practically drooling as the restaurant staff carefully stirred the cooking ingredients. This restaurant adds thicker noodles to the mix as well, which is also quite delicious. Our mouths are watering all over again just writing this blog post!

Once the meat is cooked, place it in a lettuce and/or perilla leaf wrap with garlic, ssamjang, onions, hot pepper, or any combination of the above. It tasted so amazing! Eleanor’s favourite was to use both lettuce and a perilla leaf for the wrap and then add chicken, sweet potato, cabbage, garlic, and ssamjang! And the to follow it up with yummy tteok (rice cake). So delicious! Rachel’s favourite was to savour each ingredient piece by piece! One of Rachel’s favourite parts is the bokkeumbap (볶음밥), fried rice, at the end of the meal. Rice, onions, and chopped seaweed are added to the leftover ingredients and stirred together to make the fried rice. So delicious! We definitely left the restaurant happy and satiated.
